  • Mernissi, Fatima: The Veil and the Male Elite: A Feminist Interpretation of Women's Rights in Islam, Perseus,1992, 240 pages, ISBN: 0201632217
    The book examines whether Islam is opposed to women's rights by focusing on the early year's of Islam and Mohammed's intention to create an egalitarian society without slaves or sexual discrimination. She asserts that it is the political and economic interests of a male elite--not the dictates of the religion--that are responsible for the denial of rights to women.

    The author of this challenging volume seeks to bridge this gap by incorporating feminist theory with counselling practice. Whalen argues that a counsellor working with an abused woman should not aim merely to empower the client to change a situation that is intolerable for that particular woman: the counsellor should also aim to change the social conditions that foster abuse.
